• Weight. Utes, 4WDs and vans are heavier than a passenger car, so there's simply more recyclable metal in them — more steel, and often more aluminium and copper too.
• Parts demand. This is the big one. A dead Hilux, Ranger, Triton or Land Cruiser is a goldmine of parts other owners desperately need to keep their work vehicles running. Diffs, gearboxes, trays, canopies, suspension, panels — these move fast in the used market, so a wrecker can pay you more for the complete vehicle.

That combination is why a rough but complete ute frequently beats a tidy small car on price.

What affects your ute or 4WD's value

Make and model. The workhorses hold value best — Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser, Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara, Isuzu D-Max. Strong parts demand keeps them at the higher end even at end of life.

Completeness. A whole vehicle beats a stripped one. It's tempting to pull the good bits — canopy, towbar, deck liner, tyres — and sell them separately, but a complete ute almost always nets more overall, and it's far less hassle.

Diesel vs petrol. Diesel utes are the backbone of rural work here, and their engines and drivetrains have strong salvage demand. (If it's a diesel, you may also be owed a RUC refund — worth checking before you sell.)

Condition. Running beats non-running, but we buy either. Even a seized engine or blown transmission doesn't make the vehicle worthless — the rest of it still has real value.
